Use Cases

In addition, implementing an All-Atlantic Ocean Observing System, the AtlantOS program is supporting several ocean observing use cases with specific thematic foci that showcase the added value of a more integrated ocean observing system:

  • Mitigating Impacts of Sargassum on Coastal Communities in the Tropical Atlantic, in partnership with GEO Blue Planet, MBON, US IOOS, IOCARIBE, and many others.
  • Atlantic Meridional Ocean Circulation (AMOC) provides basin-scale information by combining AMOC observing networks OSNAP, RAPID, PIRATA and SAMOC.
  • Ocean Carbon Uptake identifies sources and sinks of carbon by connecting several ongoing projects at national, regional, and international level.
  • Ecosystems Based Management for Fisheries in Atlantic Upwelling Regions, focusses on the eastern and tropical upwelling regions in the South and North Atlantic along the west coast of Africa.
  • Linking networks to predict and explain Marine Animal Movements in a changing environment, in collaboration with various regional Ocean Tracking Networks.

The AtlantOS approach to working on these cases are

  • To build upon existing data and observing infrastructures.
  • To help building community / capacity exchange.
  • To work towards needed services not presently available.
  • To create a prototype component of the final system.
  • To contribute to the implementation of international activities like GOOS Strategy 2030, OceanObs’19 follow up process, and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 – 2030).

We openly encourage and invite other use case initiatives to self-organize themselves within the frame of AtlantOS. If you would like to suggest another use case topic please get in contact with us.
